Champix Tablets

Champix which contains the medication Varenicline is used to help you stop smoking.

Who cannot take Champix?

• If you have had a previous allergic reaction to Champix
• Have a mental health condition.
• Those who under the age of 18
• If you have kidney problems
• Have problems with your heart.
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Champix works by reducing the cravings you have for Nicotine. It also helps with the withdrawal symptoms you get when you stop smoking. Withdrawal symptoms include feeling depressed, irritable, difficulty sleeping and the urge to smoke again. Champix on its own is not enough to help you stop smoking the determination to break the smoking habit is needed.

A usual course lasts around 12 weeks. Before taking Champix its important to decide on day you would like to stop smoking. Champix is started one day before this date. This will allow you to build up the dose and slowly allow your body to get used to the medication.  Champix can be taken with or without food. If you feel the Champix is making you feel sick, try taking it after a meal or snack. The tablet is swallowed whole with a glass of water.

After around 9 days of taking Champix you will see the results of you craving fewer cigarettes each day. The amount of Champix in your body will be enough to help you stop smoking. Please follow your doctors or pharmacist’s advice before taking this medication.
